Alabama Democrat Calls Out Republicans as Hypocrites on Abortion
… .Holmes goes on to tell the following story:
I asked this lady…she said her daughter was going to have an abortion. I said ‘I thought you were against abortion.’ She said, ‘Yeah, but, my daughter got pregnant by this black man.’ I said, ‘And you’re not going to let her have that baby?’ She said, ‘Oh, no!’ She thought I was crazy.
There is historical context to Holmes’ abortion comment.
In the audio clip, Holmes asks an unidentified woman if her daughter became pregnant by a black man, would she let her daughter have the baby. Of course, the woman responds as you might expect, given the exchange was being recorded and the situation was hypothetical. “Yes, sir,” she says. “Then, after it is born, what are you going to do with it?” he asks. “Let it run around in my living room and enjoy it as my grandchild,” she replies. Holmes can be heard to chuckle. “Well, I need to commend you, then,” he says. “It wouldn’t be one out of 100,000 that would do that.”
Of course, Holmes’ comments have caused a stir in some quarters. His remarks were even reported on in the UK’s Daily Mail tabloid. What will likely be missing in the coverage of his remarks is that there is some historical context for them. On one of his famous secret White House recordings Richard Nixon can be heard telling his aide, Chuck Colson, “There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white.”
